Echinocactus
The Echinocactus grusonii is one of the most popular spherical cacti in the world, also known as the “golden cactus,” “golden ball,” or, humorously, the “mother-in-law’s chair.”
It is native to Mexico and stands out for its perfect geometric symmetry and its bright, golden spines.
Key Characteristics
Shape & Size: It starts out as a perfect sphere and, over the years, takes on an oval or barrel-shaped form. It grows very slowly but can reach a height of 60–75 centimeters.
Lifespan: It is an extremely long-lived plant, as it can live anywhere from 30 to 100 years!
Flowering: It produces small yellow flowers at the top during the summer, but this only occurs in mature plants over 20 years old.
Care Instructions
Light: Requires plenty of direct sunlight. If kept indoors, place it next to a south-facing window.
Watering: It requires infrequent watering. Water only when the soil has completely dried out (approximately every 2–3 weeks in summer and almost never in winter).
Temperature: It has good cold tolerance (it can withstand temperatures as low as -5°C or -10°C for a short time if the soil is completely dry), but it is destroyed by prolonged frost and moisture
*It stands approximately 30 cm tall and comes in a ceramic pot
